Real Life Programs
Creative Writing/Performance Poetry Workshop
Our spoken word workshops are designed to engage todays youth in healthy, positive conversations about the world we live in. Our workshops focus on both performance style poetry and creative `writing techniques. The workshops are constructed in a way which fosters free expression, literacy and also team building. Performance poetry and creative writing is an excellent tool that can be used to help teach skills such as storytelling and public speaking, (a major fear to many people). We also concentrate on using performance poetry and creative writing to teach the community about the power of self-expression and using your voice to make a positive difference. As they say” The pen is mightier than the sword”

The Media Arts program seeks to develop and produce short films and media projects for students who desire to learn how to visually articulate their ideas. Media and short film projects will include hands on instruction on camera’s, lights, computers/software, and video editing. The Media Arts program has repeatedly fostered an educational and entertaining atmosphere that is conducive to learning. We use the latest technology and techniques to instill the importance of media production and controlling one’s own image.
Our visual arts Across our community and after school programs, The Real Life Poets offers visual arts programs that expose indivduals to arts adventures and stimulate their creativity. The community will be empowered with self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment through projects that can be shared with family and friends. At the same time, these valuable arts programs offer cultural exposure in often underserved areas and help to engage our demographic in safe and creative ways.
Culinary arts workshops are designed to allow individuals to use something familiar, such as food in an unfamiliar way, with a emphasis on the idea you can get anything you want out of life as long as you are willing to add the right “ingredients” and follow the “recipe”. We focus on nutritional cooking, the art of food and food science. Workshops are constructed in a way that allows one to use food as a passport to step outside of the box and face several common dilemmas within the community. Aside from teaching basic cooking skills these workshops are excellent for team building, problem solving and expansion of creativity. We use food to concentrate on a myriad of topics and open up discussions about life, family and community.
We offer beginner-level American Sign Language, an overview of deaf culture and there is a push on nationally high school/college level that is recognizing american sign language as a second language. It exposes the community to a culture and language that is not well understood in America.
